8th Grade Ethics

Brief Overview

This course is designed to examine individual decision-making and responsibility. Using a range of current topics and parts of the Facing History program, students will work on writing and comprehension, formulating arguments, and thinking critically about modern society. Weeks 1 and 2: Introduction and Challenges
Weeks 3 and 4: Individuals and Groups
Weeks 5 and 6: Stereotyping and Race
Weeks 7 and 8: Entertainment and Sports
Weeks 9 and 10: Politics and War
Weeks 11 and 12: Culminating project


Homework will be listed every day on both the homework board and website. Students will be responsible for the following:

Daily assignments:

You will have a writing assignment almost every night. The topics will be listed on the homework board, the website, and the blog site. These assignments will deal with the topic discussed that day in class. They will be graded on a 5 point scale.

Turning in:

Homework is due by 8:00 each morning. Please note that 8:00 does not mean after advisory. All daily assignments will be turned in through a web blog at http://www.mrlarsongsl.blogspot.com/. Please follow the directions on the website for submitting your comments. Late assignments will be lowered a letter grade.


On alternating Fridays, you will take a short (20 point quiz) over the major ideas and concepts of the previous two weeks.


You will be responsible for keeping a journal. The journals will have your reflections on various topics posted at the beginning of each class. Journals will be collected every alternating Friday.


Near the end of the semester you will complete a project that reflects what you have learned about ethics. This project will also demonstrate how you plan to apply what you have learned into your daily lives.

All graded work will be assigned a point value. The point totals should make grades easy to compute at any point during the trimester.

Classroom Procedures

Daily Assignments:

After you write down you nights homework, you will begin writing in your journal. There will be a journal prompt for you to work from. As previously mentioned, I will collect these journals every other Friday and you will be assigned points based in its completion.

Class Participation:

During class we will discuss, in length, various topics about ethics. It is very important that you participate in these discussions. Your ability to communicate your thoughts about a particular topic is an essential part of this course.

Class notes:

It is suggested that you take notes during our class discussions. As we are not working from any particular book, the quizzes you will be on our class discussions. In essence, your notes will be the only thing for you to study from for the quizzes.


The expectations that I expect to be followed in the classroom are:

1. Come to class prepared and on time.
2. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
3. Raise your hand and wait to be called on.
4. Use kind and appropriate language.
5. Be considerate of school and personal property.


The consequences for inappropriate behavior in the classroom are three strikes and your out. I will give students 2 verbal warnings and on the 3rd one I will ask them to leave the classroom and sit in the hallway. If a student refuses to leave the classroom or continues to act in an inappropriate manner I will ask them to visit with Mr. Kvande and they will receive a conduct referral.
